Darien Pritchard has been a bodyworker since 1977, including 25 years of training massage professional (including 5 years as part of a University Degree course) and of teaching Professional Development courses for qualified massage practitioners.
He has been a pioneer in focusing on the massage practitioner’s bodyuse as an integral part of massage training in the UK and has also pioneered pioneered Hands Free Massage – the skillful, sensitive use of the forearms and elbows to save the practitioner’s hands.
At the same time he developed RhythmMobility® bodywork in his practice for release, re-energising and rebalancing the body – combining elements of massage and the Feldenkrais Method® with his love of rhythm.
He is the co-author of the student text Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for the Massage Therapist (2001/04) and wrote the career-maintenance reference book Dynamic Bodyuse for Effective, Strain-Free Massage (UK, USA, 2007) and is currently writing a book on Hands Free Massage.
Darien is a past co-director of the Massage Training Institute, a UK-wide organisation of holistic massage schools, and has been involved with massage councils involved in raising UK massage training standards. Since 1993, he has been a guest teacher on the massage training course at the Royal National College for the Blind.
His approach to bodywork has been influenced by the study of Yoga, Tai Chi, creative dance and training in the Feldenkrais Method®” of movement awareness.
Alongside his professional life, Darien has nurtured his interest in movement, rhythm and release through dancing and playing music. He has worked with dancers on greater ease and flexibility in performance, run courses on Dancing for the Joy of It (helping people to discover the ‘dancer within’), and designed a programme for actors on the physical embodiment of character (‘I Feel a Character Coming On’).
For twenty five years he has also taught the body release sections of the training courses run by the singer Frankie Armstrong for people wishing to learn the Natural Voice Liberation approach that she pioneered in Britain, Europe and Australia.
Darien teaches an extensive RhythmMobility® training course (10 days) and a Hands Free Massage training course (8 days), which combine depth and movement into comprehensive treatment approaches which are designed to release muscle tension, restore mobility to joints, promote suppleness and rebalance the body.
For twenty five years Darien has also taught a range of other one and two-day professional development courses for massage practitioners.
Darien also does individual, paired, and small group coaching for massage practitioners – focusing on good bodyuse, saving your hands, fluidity and continuity in massage and application of individual techniques, as well as aspects of the workshop themes listed above.
He also teaches be-spoke Train the Trainer day/longer courses – training massage tutors to teach aspects of professional training in an inspiring, creative, but solidly grounded way.
