Self-massage and mobilising your neck

It’s very easy to build up tension in your neck in massage by working hard with your shoulders, including by tensing your shoulders (often unconsciously) as you apply pressure and do strong sliding stokes. This article looks at three ways of massaging your neck, and a way of mobilising it to release some of the tension there.

Massaging your neck with the heels of your hands

It’s not easy massaging your neck without tensing your shoulders in the process. So we’ll use both hands together to massage the back of your neck to reduce the pressure on each shoulder as you work.

Squeeze between your hands

lift both elbows high enough that you’re not pulling your neck forward in the process.
